Petzl has issued a recall for some GRIGRI 2 belay devices. The Grigri is a very popular belay device for sport climbers and others, and the Grigri 2 was a re-design of the classic device, making it lighter and allowing for a wider range of rope diameters.
The recall concerns damage to the device if too much force is applied to the lowering lever. The damage is internal, and can cause the device to become stuck in the open position. This means that it would no longer break a climbers fall.
So far, only devices with serial numbers with the first five digits between 10326 and 11136 are affected.
Please see the Petzl site for information on the recall – Petzl will replace the devices and pay for shipping.
